Dr. Leslie Lenert, a professor of medicine at the University of California at San Diego, has been named to head the National Center for Public Health Informatics at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Although CDC created the center in October 2005, Lenert will become its first permanent director on July 23. Dr. Bob Martin, director of the Laboratory Systems Division, has been acting director.
In addition to teaching at the university, Lenert is director of the health services research unit at the Veterans Affairs Departments San Diego Healthcare System and associate director of the San Diego division of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology. He also serves on the board of the American Medical Informatics Association.
Lenert has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters on topics that include internal medicine, pharmacology, health services research and IT. He holds degrees in biomedical science, medicine and medical information sciences from three California universities.
The National Center for Public Health Informatics sponsors research and assists state and local governments with the application of informatics to public health.

In doing so, he describes the current information technology solutions for transferring clinical data between battlefield care givers to health care personnel at military treatment facilities worldwide.
