The Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel is inviting the public to comment on two documents that will be the foundation of the panel’s next batch of interoperability standards.

The requirements, design and standards selection documents lay out the elements of standards in two areas: e-health records for use in emergency response and security and privacy capabilities that span several settings.

The panel’s mission is to harmonize existing information technology standards, in the interest of greater interoperability among health applications and products. The panel operates with support from the Department of Health and Human Services.

The panel’s work plans follow the lead of the American Health Information Community (AHIC), the high-level federal advisory body headed by HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt. When the panel completes a set of standards requested by AHIC, it submits them to AHIC for its endorsement.

The recommended standards for the areas covered in the two documents that the panel has posted for comments are expected to be completed later this year.

Comments should be submitted online through June 14. The documents and the comment tracking system are on the panel’s Web site.
